Families Flock to Pre-loved Bike Sales

THE pre-loved bike sales organised by Tameside Council's population health team in Hyde and Stalybridge weren’t so much Tour de France as a tour de force.

Interest was enormous and 75 machines were sold over the two days – virtually every bike in stock. Demand was so big that people had to be turned away and a third sale organised which will take place at Active Ken Ward, Hattersley Road East, Hattersley, on Wednesday, August 17 (10am to 2pm).

Pre-loved sales offer quality, fully-serviced and restored children’s cycles courtesy of Manchester Bike Kitchen – a not-for-profit community interest company working with Suez Recycling and Recovery to breathe new life into items people no longer need.

Last week’s bargains included toddlers' balance bikes from £10 and bikes for a three to 12-year-olds from £25.

In addition, people could bring along their own cycles for a free safety check and anti-theft marking.

Representatives of sustainable transport planning group Mosodi were at the Stalybridge sale, commissioned by TfGM as part of the Mayor’s Challenge Fund to promote cycling and walking routes.

Cllr Eleanor Wills, Tameside Council’s executive member for population health and wellbeing, said: “I’m delighted the sale went so well. It was just what I expected.

“Sales like these are a wonderful idea to make cycling and all the associated health and environmental benefits more accessible to local families. I look forward to Tameside hosting more in the future.”
